Prairie Rose Farms

Prairie Rose Farms was a small ranch that was purchased by my great, great, great grandparents.  Located in the Rocky Mountains about an hour south of Bozeman, Montana, it was their dream property.  A creek ran through a meadow with incredible views in every direction.  There was a small cabin and a half built barn and that's about it.  Grandpa Joe had been to England and seen the beautiful Irish cobs there and really wanted to raise them.  But at the time there were none in this country and they would not have been well suited to the terrain.  So he settled on the next best thing, stock horses with the bold tobiano and overo patterns of the cobs.  His first Paint was an ugly mare named Figgy.  She was a mess conformationally, she was affected by the genetic disorder, but she was one of the best mares this ranch has ever known.  Grandpa did some breeding with some key stallions, bought some great starter stock and had some very amazing horses within 2 or 3 generations.  And we have been in business ever since.
Today, our focus is still a great Western horse, be it reining, halter or pleasure.  We have also added some lovely little Japanese Hokkaidos and one heavy draft, the Ardennais. I continue to try to live up to Grandpa Joe's goals and reputation.  With all the changes in technology, training methods and showing, I am in the process of making some changes, but I know it will only make things better.  I have some old champions that are still bringing in lots of money and some great young champions too.  So, that's the home farm.  Check out our ranch staff page to meet the folks that help me keep this place going.
