Foals due this year

I have a big foaling season, at least for me, this year.  3 mares due!  Lol!  One of each breed so it will be a motley crew in the pasture.

So, first to show any signs of getting close is maiden Ardennais mare, Mabel.  She is bred to a sire I haven't tried before, Tygrus' Hidden Flyer.  He is a extraordinarily strong and I am hoping that the foal will get that strength plus Mabel's brains and movement for a good in-hand and pulling horse.  Mabel is now developing a small bag so I assume she will go first.

I also have Paint mare, April, bred to her paternal grand sire, Panama.  April is a beautiful girl that looked on paper like she should have done fabulously well in the show ring but she didn't have that spark.  I am very much hoping this foal will inherit that from the double dose of Panama in it's pedigree.  This is April's second foal, her first being Ginger, also sired by Panama.  Ginger was devastatingly overworked as a young horse and it took her years to fully recover to show condition.  By then, I was in the process of taking over from Gammy and wasn't involved in showing very actively and so she just kind of lost her chance to show.  But the few she was in, she did fabulously well.  She is now also in my broodmare band and I will be breeding her this upcoming season in hopes of getting more foals just like her.  So, I am hoping this new foal gets to have the show career that Ginger didn't.  April is huge as an elephant and looks miserable but is so far showing no signs of impending labor.  She is due in 35 days so she has time yet.

Lastly is my imported Hokkaido mare, Seiki.  She has had several gorgeous fillies for me already, all sired by the great LS stallion, Galadhremmen.  He has since passed on and all his straws are used up, so this year she is bred to LS Hidden Flyer, the same stallion Mabel is bred to.  Hoping again for that extraordinary strength and great temperament to come through.  Seiki is 18 now and I probably won't get many more foals out of her, so I am hoping this is a really good cross.  If so, she will be bred back to Flyer for next year.

So, that is our lineup for foaling.  I have the webcams up and running, although for now, Mabel is only stalled at night.  And I leave the door open so she can get in the run and roll and visit with the other girls over the fence if she wants to.  If you see anything unusual or worrisome, please call.  I would rather wake up and have it be nothing than miss something important.  I will post newborn pictures and birth stories as the foals arrive.

  1. Mabel is a beautiful girl. I think Hidden Flyer will definitely improve the Strength of the build overall, as well as perhaps adding some stamina. I know most do not think about this factor in draft disciplines, but consider this; even the most average man can lift 500lbs once if he has muscles, but the man who can do so many times in a row is going to win the lifting competition in the long run. Stamina can play a factor is many disciplines, even if it's not highlighted strongly overall in the guidebooks.

  2. Love Mabel, she's such a sweet girl. Flyer does add some nice strength to his foals. Can't wait to see April's foal.

  3. Excellent thought on the stamina. Certainly can't hurt to boost that. Can't wait to see both Flyer foals and how he affects the 2 different broods. And April is so beautiful that I know her foal will be too.

  4. That should say breeds, not broods. My iPad doesn't play well with blogger.
