So, a little about my future plans. I am in the process of a coming up with a 10 year plan toward early retirement. At the end of that time, I do not want to have an outside job at all. I would like to be training my show horses with the help of hired exercise attendants and a few groomers. I will keep Jack on, until
he wants to retire, to take care of the day to day details that go into running this place. He has a great relationship with the farrier (it's his son, Cory!) and the vet, Dr. Sam, actually Samantha Drake, DVM. And, he and his wife, Ruth, live here in the original house, so I don't think he will ever leave me. At least I hope not. I have already cut back my hours at work and begun training some of the younger horses just to get back in the swing of it. And, it was obvious that it had been too long. I accidentally overworked a couple of them to the point of exhaustion. Oops! Thankfully, no injuries, but it is going to take a good long while to get them back to prime shape. Anyway, I am relearning what my mom taught me through trial and error (and some late night phone calls) and I am loving every minute of it! I am very excited for the future of my little empire.
I must be rusty too! I did the exact same thing to a couple of mine. I got a nice berating from my head trainer, Tom.
ReplyDeleteI have several that I have accidentally exhausted... I am really confused by some though. They would be able to handle a certain amount of training for several days, then suddenly they became exhausted?? Have you guys ever experienced this?
ReplyDeleteI have. I think it is cumulative or maybe just having a bad day. I monitor them very closely now, and if I think there is even a chance of a problem I groom them instead.
ReplyDeleteI haven't done this yet but I also think how they behave during the workouts affects them. It takes much more energy to fight the lead for instance than it does to just walk beside you. That's my theory at any rate.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think it takes lots more energy to canter badly than well. But maybe I don't know what I am talking about.
